MPP Walker pleased inter-library loan program has been restored

OWEN SOUND – Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker is happy the inter-library loan program is being restored after library service organizations identified operational efficiencies to make it happen.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Michael Tibollo announced the restoration of the program last week after his ministry held consultations with Southern Ontario Library Service (SOLS) and the Ontario Library Service – North (OLS-N).

The inter-library loan program was restored effective June 1.

“It’s very gratifying to see a solution reached to restore the inter-library loan program. I’m pleased the collaborative efforts of Minister Tibollo, his staff, SOLS and OLS-N resulted in a resolution that restores the service,” said Walker. “Working together to find a path forward is always the better alternative.”

The consultations between the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, SOLS and OLS-N resulted in the following:

  • OLS-N and SOLS identified opportunities to modernize and find efficiencies within their operations.
  • None of the efficiencies affect front line service to customers – library users will continue to enjoy the same level of service as they have come to expect at their local libraries.
  • No additional funding has been provided to either organization – budgets remain the same as originally provided in the 2019 budget.
  • The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport continues to maintain base funding for public libraries at $25 million per year.

“Thank you to SOLS and OLS-N for your cooperation in providing vital services to the people of Ontario. I am pleased a solution was found to restore inter-library programs across Ontario,” said Tibollo.

“Over the last month, the Southern Ontario Library Service and the Ontario Library Service – North have worked with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport to revise our 2019-20 budgets to achieve a common goal. The goal was to focus on programs that have the greatest impact to public libraries and their users. As a result of that work, a solution has been found to restore inter-library loan services across the province beginning on June 1,” Said OLS-N CEO Melissa D’Onofrio-Jones and SOLS CEO Barbara Franchetto in a joint statement.
