$75,000 OTF grant focuses on community-based programs for isolated seniors in Southgate

DUNDALK – On Tuesday March 12, 2019, MPP Bill Walker met with representatives at the South East Grey Community Centre (SEGCHC) to hear more about an expansion of community-based programs for isolated seniors in Southgate. The Centre is now delivering these programs thanks to receiving a $75,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) Seed grant last summer.

“I’m very happy to see this investment from the Ontario Trillium Foundation,” said Walker. “The programs offered by the South East Grey Community Health Centre are very valuable and are giving our isolated seniors connections to our community.”

To help develop and deliver these programs that will help seniors remain engaged and connected to the community, the Centre looked to OTF to assist with some of the costs involved with piloting a program. The grant will help with staffing, buying furniture as well as program materials (eg: art supplies, books, games), helping with bus rentals to get seniors to and from events, and providing instructors to lead the sessions.

“We know how important social contact is to the mental and physical health of seniors in our communities,” said Jane de Jong, Chair of the South East Grey Community Centre Board of Directors.  “We are very pleased that this funding through the Ontario Trillium Foundation will enable us to reach isolated seniors in Southgate and provide them with regular, accessible programs. The OTF Seed grant has further strengthened the relationship between the South East Grey Community Health Centre and the Ontario Trillium Foundation in developing programs that meet the needs of the communities we serve.”

The South East Grey Community Health Centre is committed to meeting the primary care, health promotion and community development needs of the residents of Southgate, Grey Highlands, Chatsworth and West Grey.  The South East Grey CHC is a charitable organization that receives funding through the South West Local Health Integration Network.
