MPP Walker calls into question potential child care closures

QUEEN’S PARK -- Local MPP Bill Walker has again raised concerns over the Liberal Government’s plan for school closures, this time focusing on its impact on the availability of child care spaces in Bruce and Grey.

In today’s Question Period, Walker asked the education minister to come clean about how many child-care spaces could have stayed open if the government hadn’t shut down all those schools across Ontario.

“I want to know how many daycare spaces they closed when they shut down hundreds of schools across Ontario, and how many millions of dollars they wasted shutting them down,” Walker said.

“This is a very real concern for parents in my riding where schools remain under threat of closure. I’m told school closures could trigger the loss of as many as 100 spaces in child care and the Before-and-After School program. That’s a huge impact on families with young children,” he said. “Yet again this Liberal government is penalizing people of our province for their incompetence.”

When the minister refused to respond to Walker’s question, he sent her a letter, reminding her that the Ministry of Education has provincial responsibility for both child care and education and is mandated to provide direction for a coordinated early learning system.

He is also calling on Education Mitzie Hunter to come clean about whether or not she will reinstate schools that closed under her ministry’s faulty pupil accommodation review guidelines.

“School closures are a problem that affects the education of our children, the economy and quality of life of the people in my communities and it has to be taken seriously. I don’t believe continuing to say nothing is an option for this minister and government,” said Walker.
